Running Tips - Running Safely In The Dark

Most runners at one time or another will find themselves running in the dark. If it's winter time, you may be running after work when it's already dark. In the summer time, you may be running super early in the morning to beat the heat. So, one way or another, there will be times when you will be running when it's dark out.

Actually, I enjoy running in the early morning hours when it's still dark out. It's so peaceful out when most of the rest of the world is asleep. And, it's especially nice when it's a big full moon in the sky.

Runners need to be a little more cautious when running in the dark, but there are some tips to make it less dangerous.

Make sure you are wearing reflective gear.

You want to make sure that you are well seen in the dark. So, if you light up like a Christmas tree - that's OK! There are all kind of reflective wear available - shirts, jackets, caps, as well as reflective vests.

Watch Out For Areas That Are Not Well Lit

There are a couple of reasons for this. You want oncoming cars, other runners, etc. to see you and also see animals that may be out there. (If you've ever come up on a skunk in the dark, you know what I mean!). Also, you want to be able to see where you are running. There may be large rocks or items that you may trip on if you can't see them.

Run Facing Traffic

This is important all the time, but especially crucial if you are running in the dark. You want to see what is coming up on you and be prepared to move out of the way.

Let Someone Know Your Plan

Before you head out, let someone know of your running plans. Make them aware of the route you plan to run and how long you plan on being gone. Then, let them know when you return.

Carry Identification

Make sure you are carrying some sort of identification when you are running. This is important at all times, but especially in the dark.

Running in the dark doesn't need to worry you or your loved ones. Just make sure you are running smart and being aware of your surroundings. You never know - you may even learn to enjoy a peaceful morning run!
